Is A Saline Solution Breast Implant Filling The Best Choice?

When considering a breast implant, there are two main types of implant options: saline solution or silicone gel. Because breast implants are installed using plastic surgery, risks are involved. The type of breast implant that offers the least amount of risk is highly debated. We will look at the benefits and risks of saline solution breast implants.

All breast implants feature a silicone outer shell. The inner filling of the breast implant is what sets the implant types apart. Saline solution offers several advantages over its silicone gel counterpart. However, there are disadvantages to saline solution breast implants, as well. Make sure to talk to a certified plastic surgeon before beginning any serious plans for breast implant surgery.

Between 1992 and 2006, the FDA disapproved the use of silicone gel in breast implants due to concerns of serious health risks. Risks were associated with the silicone leaking into the woman's body in the case of a breast implant rupture. This is not an issue for saline solution breast implants. Saline solution is essentially saltwater which is not harmful if a breast implants ruptures or leaks.

Another advantage of saline solution breast implants is the speed at which a rupture is noticed. Due to the consistency of saline being water, a ruptured implant is very quickly noticed because the breast essentially deflates. Catching a rupture or leak as soon as it happens can help speed up the process of repairs or corrective surgery.

Breast implants filled with saline solution are usually filled after the implant is placed in the breast. This allows for easy adjustment of size because the implants are not usually pre-filled. Saline solution can show ripples more easily than silicone, though. This is especially problematic in women with very little breast fat tissue to cover the implant, such as thin women or women undergoing breast reconstruction.

Another disadvantage of saline solution breast implants is that the appearance and texture of the implant is not as realistic as silicone. Saline solution implants are more susceptible to capsular contracture than silicone gel implants, also. Capsular contracture is a complication that occurs when the scar tissue tightens around the implant, and the implant becomes hardened and sometimes painful.

Saline solution implants provide a lot of advantages over other breast implant options, but the disadvantages need to be considered, as well. If cost is a large factor in your decision, saline solution breast implants may be at the top of your list. Saline implants are generally less expensive than other options. Also, saline solution breast implants are available in different shapes, such as round or teardrop, so that they can more easily blend in with your natural body shape.

Breast augmentation or reconstruction is an important decision. Carefully weigh your options when considering any type of cosmetic plastic surgery. Talk to your plastic surgeon about the benefits and risks associated with saline solution breast implants and your other options before making any critical decisions regarding breast implant surgery.
